Expertise Alan Nelson has been in the conflict business for more than forty years. First as a trial lawyer and for the past ten years as a mediator. He has been a Senior Advocate (SC) for thirty years and has acted as a Judge of the Cape High Court. In 2023 he was shortlisted as one of five candidates for the position of Chief Justice of South Africa by a Select Panel appointed by the President of South Africa. Alan qualified as a mediator in May 2012 and is an accredited CEDR mediator. Alan has undergone specialist mediation training in Switzerland. Alan currently trains mediators at the University of Cape Town and is a co-founder of the ‘Nelson Peace Centre’, where specialist mediators are trained under the auspices of UCT to conduct mediation in specialist fields. Alan serves on four mediation panels. He is the co-founder of ‘Mediation in Motion Mediators’, a not for profit company that promotes mediation and links those in need to specialist mediators via an innovative electronic process. Alan frequently addresses audiences on mediation. Alan has mediated hundreds of disputes over the past ten years and is convinced that mediation is by far the best way to achieve just outcomes in conflict situations.
